NaNoWriMo: The Islands Beyond, Day 2

Day 2

Off and running! I wrapped it up at 5250 words. Still in the “easy pickings” phase of the creative process. Helps that it’s a weekend.

Here’s an excerpt:

With his last kick, the heads of the screws holding the cleat to the deck had snapped, and the cleat slipped overboard, landing in the water with a splash. Without the rope to secure it, the front end of the boat was immediately driven away from the dock by the strong wind.

Pete, who still stood on the dock, ran towards the rear of the boat, which was still attached by a rope. He called to his brother.

“Jump back to the dock.”

Ethan stared down at the dark gap of water. “I can’t. It’s too far. I’ll fall in.”

Pete put his new gift, The Ashley Book of Knots, down on the dock and gripped the rope. He hoped somehow to pull the boat back towards the dock, but the boat was too large and the wind too strong. To Ethan’s surprise, the next thing his brother did was to straighten himself and run at the boat. He jumped at the last moment, cleared the water and landed on the deck of the boat with a thud.

“Are you crazy?” shouted Ethan. “What are you doing?”

Pete didn’t get a chance to answer him. At that moment, a sharp snap came from the cleat at their feet as the screws snapped and the rope fell away. The boat was now free of its moorings, and moving with the wind towards the mouth of the harbour.
