NaNoWriMo: Zoonosis Day 11

I feel as if every day I’m falling a little farther behind!  But a few good days of steady writing can still remedy that.  I’ve been stuck on a tricky part of the story over the last few days, and that has not helped my word count.  Today’s total was 1,677 words, for a total of 16,250 words.  Here’s today’s snippet:

The steel door at the opposite side of the helipad opened, and more men in uniform emerged. Then, to Karlis’ surprise, a child emerged, a dark-haired boy who could not have been more than eight years old. He was followed by an old woman who walked with a stoop. More and more people spilled out onto the deck, and the men in uniform shepherded them into formation with their guns.
