NaNoWriMo: Zoonosis Day 2

Here’s todays snippet, coming in at 4766 words:

Weathered stone provided the basis for terrestrial life. Birds arrived. Soil formed. Plants flourished. And then, as if Nature had intended for Grass Island to be an earthly haven in the midst of empty seas, a tremor in the seabed fractured the island’s foundations. Rainwater, slowed by the presence of grasses, tricked in and formed an aquifer. The bowl-shaped centre of the island became a lush-but-virtually-inaccessible plateau.
